Late summer suits Lake Como. The July crowds thin a little, the light softens by five o’clock, and the water holds its warmth into September. It is the season for a long villa lunch, a slow crossing between shores, and an afternoon that runs on your clock rather than a timetable. The lake is small on a map and awkward in person: narrow roads, tight villages, ferries that fill by mid-morning. A well-planned day fixes most of that. Why the western shore reads best
Start with geography, because it decides everything else. The lake is shaped like an upturned Y, with Como city at the south-western tip and Bellagio sitting on the promontory where the two lower arms meet. Most of the grand villas line the central and western shores, within easy reach of Tremezzina, Lenno and Cadenabbia.
Driving the shore road is the romantic idea. In practice it is slow, and parking near the villages is scarce in August. The sensible version is a point to point transfer to your first stop, then the boat for the parts of the day where the road works against you. Let the chauffeur handle the road; let the ferry handle the water.
The villas worth your morning

One practical note that catches people out: the villa has no public ferry stop. Public ferries do not stop at the villa, but you can reach Lenno, then walk or take the taxi-boat from there. The garden walk from Lenno takes roughly twenty-five minutes, part of it uphill. Book ahead, because the villa is managed by the FAI, and tickets purchased on-site are limited, so you might face long waiting times or even be unable to enter if the daily quota is full.
For art indoors and a large botanical park, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo sits directly across the water from Bellagio. It is both a museum of art and sculpture and one of the most important botanical gardens in northern Italy. And in Bellagio itself, Villa Melzi opens its gardens rather than its house, which suits a shorter visit before lunch.
Lunch, and how to time it
The trick with a villa lunch is not the restaurant. It is the sequence. Go to the gardens early, before the heat and the ferry loads, then eat late. Aim for the villa gates as they open, wander for an hour or two, and hold your table for one o’clock or later. By then the morning boats have delivered the day-trippers and you have the terraces closer to yourself.
Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo all keep good lakeside kitchens. If you are staying out on the lake for the afternoon, an hourly hire is the honest choice. The car waits while you eat, the driver knows where to pull in, and you are not watching a clock through your risotto. Late summer evenings are long enough that a two o’clock lunch still leaves the golden hour for the water.
Making sense of the crossings
The central lake is where the ferries earn their keep. The core triangle links Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, with Cadenabbia added on the western side. Crossings are short and frequent: the ferry from Varenna to Bellagio takes around 15 to 20 minutes and runs many times per day in high season. The car ferry is faster than it sounds against the road. The Bellagio to Varenna crossing takes roughly 10 minutes by car ferry, far faster than driving around the lake, which is 65 km and about 90 minutes via Lecco.
Two things to know before you queue. First, the boats fill. During peak weekends in July and August, queues can form at Bellagio and Varenna between 10:00 and 14:00, so arriving before 9:00 or after 15:00 avoids the worst congestion. Second, a day pass pays off quickly if you are hopping villages. Free circulation day passes give unlimited hop-on, hop-off within a defined zone, are available for the central lake area, and are ideal if you plan to visit two or more villages in a day.
- Slow ferries give you the open upper deck and the views. Take them when time is loose.
- Car ferries run more often and load faster. Take them when you are moving the car across.
- Hydrofoils cut the Como to Bellagio run short, but tickets go before boarding, not on board.
If a crossing does not suit your schedule, a private water taxi fills the gap, and your chauffeur can meet you at the pier on the far shore. That handover, boat to car, is the part we plan most carefully.
A day out that actually flows
Here is a shape that works in late summer. Morning collection from your hotel, driven to Lenno for Villa del Balbianello at opening. Back to the shore road by late morning, a short hop to Tremezzo, then a long lunch on the water. Afternoon crossing to Bellagio for the gardens and the stepped lanes, coffee looking back across to the western villas, and an early-evening drive home before the light goes. The car carries the bags, the boat carries you, and nobody is hunting for parking.
