Zandvoort sits on the dunes, a short run west of Amsterdam. On a normal August day you could cover the distance in well under an hour. During a race weekend, that maths falls apart. Roads close, park-and-ride sites fill, and the last stretch into the circuit becomes the slowest part of the trip. This is the final Dutch Grand Prix under the current agreement, so the crowds will be larger and the sense of occasion sharper. A car and driver who knows the route removes the guesswork. Here is how we plan it.
The dates, and why they matter for your travel
The weekend runs from Friday to Sunday, with the main event on the closing day. Point-to-point transport from central Amsterdam works best when it is built around the session times, not around a rough guess. Practice and qualifying draw heavy morning traffic. Sunday brings the biggest arrival peak of all.
For 2026, the calendar is fixed. The Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix takes place across the weekend of 21 to 23 August 2026 at Circuit Zandvoort, with the Grand Prix itself on Sunday 23 August. This edition is also notable for another reason. The 2026 running is the last Dutch Grand Prix under the promoter’s current contract, and the first at Zandvoort to feature the sprint format. Expect that to lift demand for tickets, hotels and cars well ahead of the weekend.
Getting out of Amsterdam without losing the morning
The trap most visitors fall into is leaving too late. Traffic towards the coast builds early, and the closer you get to Zandvoort the fewer options you have to reroute. We tell clients to treat the drive as two halves: the fast motorway section, then the slow, managed approach near the circuit.
A few things worth knowing before you set off:
- Give yourself a wide buffer on Sunday. The final-lap crowds and the last-ever billing will pull larger numbers than a standard year.
- Ask your driver about drop-off points. Access changes during the event, and the nearest legal stop can shift from session to session.
- Keep your pick-up flexible. Races overrun, podium celebrations linger, and rigid timings rarely survive contact with a Grand Prix afternoon.
For groups travelling together, a business van keeps everyone in one vehicle rather than splitting across taxis that may not arrive together. For a couple or a pair of colleagues, the business class saloon is the quieter choice.
Flying in for the weekend
Most international visitors land at Schiphol, which sits conveniently to the south-west of the city and is closer to Zandvoort than the centre is. If you are arriving on Thursday or Friday morning, a booked airport transfer means your driver is tracking the flight and waiting when you clear the terminal, rather than you joining a taxi queue with the rest of the arrivals hall.
The advantage compounds on the way home. Sunday evening departures from Schiphol are busy at the best of times. A driver who leaves Zandvoort at the right moment, ahead of the full exodus, can make the difference between a relaxed check-in and a sprint through the gate.
Hourly hire for the days around the race
A race weekend is rarely only about the race. There are dinners in the Nine Streets, meetings in the business district, a morning at the Rijksmuseum before the afternoon session. Rather than booking separate journeys, many clients keep a car and driver on hourly hire for the day. The car waits while you do what you came to do, then moves you on.
It suits the Zandvoort schedule well. You can hold the vehicle through a long lunch, run out to the coast for qualifying, then return to the city for the evening without renegotiating anything.
